Websites and web apps, design systems, SEO, AEO, GEO and iPhone apps from a London product engineer

I’m Zander Martineau, a product engineer based in London. I have 18 years of experience, and I specialise in front-end web development: the part of a website or app that people see and use. I can help you build a website or app, keep it looking consistent, get it found online, or put it on the iPhone.

Websites and web apps

I make websites and web apps that are fast, easy to use and built to last. I also fix or rebuild old ones. Two kinds of build:

  • Web apps that people log in to and use, with a database behind them. I build these with React and a server-side Node backend.
  • Information-heavy sites, such as company and content sites. I build these with Astro.

At Dare (external site) I led several mission-critical projects for risk-management software used by energy traders. Before that I built for fintech, health and music companies.

What you get:

  • A site that loads fast and works for everyone, including people who use screen readers. Speed also helps you rank in search and AI answers.
  • A rebuild of an old app, without losing what works.
  • AI features inside your product, such as a chat that answers questions about your data.
  • A quick start. My Zed Stack is a set of ready-made project templates for web apps, content sites, packages and iPhone apps. A new project starts with the sign-in, database and hosting already set up.

You can see my work on this site. It has a desktop mode, a terminal mode and site-wide search. Read the colophon for how it is built.

Design systems

A design system is a shared kit of buttons, colours and rules. It makes a product look and work the same everywhere. I build design systems that teams actually use. At Dare (external site) I built the kit for that software. It replaced four separate styling systems and became the shared base for every part of the product. See my CV for the detail.

My open source work in this area:

Get found in Google and AI answers (SEO, AEO and GEO)

Three names, one job: make your site easy to find, easy to read and easy to trust.

  • SEO (search engine optimisation) helps you rank in Google and Bing.
  • AEO (answer engine optimisation) helps tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews quote your site as the answer.
  • GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the same aim from the other side: being named and cited in AI-written answers.

The base is the same for all three: clean pages, clear writing and extra data that tells machines what each page is. I do the technical work in your code and the writing work on your pages.

What I do:

  • Audit. I check your site for problems that hide it from Google and AI tools. You get a short list of fixes, most important first.
  • Labels for machines. I add hidden data to each page, so search and AI tools know what the page is, who wrote it and when. This is called structured data (JSON-LD).
  • Page writing. I rewrite page titles and opening paragraphs, so each page says what you do and answers one clear question near the top.
  • Crawler access. I set the rules for which search and AI robots may read your site, and add feeds and an llms.txt file. Evidence says llms.txt does little today, so I treat it as a cheap extra, not a fix.
  • Check. I test the result in Google’s Rich Results Test and in the AI tools themselves.

This site is a working example. View source on any blog post to see the structured data. Read the colophon for how it is built. Nobody can promise a rank or a place in an AI answer, and I won’t promise one. I can make sure nothing on your side stops you getting one.

iPhone apps

I design and build iPhone apps, from first idea to the App Store:

  • Moons: a quiet way to keep in touch with twelve people.
  • Green Claws: a plant diary built around photographs.
  • Otter: a bookmark manager and media tracker with a native iPhone app.
